Sigrid returns with playful new single ‘Jellyfish’

Norwegian pop powerhouse Sigrid returns today with ‘Jellyfish’, a luminous new single that marks a fresh era for the acclaimed artist. Known for her distinctive rasp and soaring vocal ability, Sigrid has become the modern pop voice of Scandinavia. Rising from the tiny fishing town of Ålesund, she quickly gained global acclaim with two critically lauded albums and a string of worldwide hits.

From 2019’s top 5 hit ‘Sucker Punch’ to 2022’s top 3 smash ‘How to Let Go’, Sigrid has carved a reputation for turning raw emotion into soaring festival anthems. With ‘Jellyfish’, she leans into a more playful side. The track channels the indie-leaning sound of early 2000s music, inspired by what she grew up listening to on her iPod. The vibe is carefree and nostalgic yet refreshingly new, perfectly captured in the weird and wonderful official video, which premiered today at 3pm BST.

Earlier this week, Sigrid surprised fans with a secret show at Oslo in London, where she performed new songs alongside classics including ‘Strangers’ and ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’. The performance confirmed her continuing ability to connect deeply with audiences.

Sigrid’s evolving sound balances vulnerability and joy

Sigrid’s discography demonstrates her skill in transforming piano-written songs into global pop forces. Her breakthrough feminist anthem ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ paired soaring vocals with powerful drum claps to express independence. The disco-infused ‘Mirror’ channels self-confidence into a joyous festival moment, while the top 10 hit ‘Strangers’ offers fearless honesty about heartbreak.

Now 28, Sigrid approaches themes of love and loss with a wiser, more nuanced perspective. Speaking about ‘Jellyfish’, she describes it as showcasing her “slightly more free-spirited and joyous side.” She wanted the song to feel easy, like a Scandinavian summer, capturing the chaotic yet thrilling nature of flirting.

The single was co-written with longtime collaborator Askjell Solstrand, who also co-wrote and produced her breakthrough ballad ‘Dynamite’. Their decade-long friendship fosters a trusting creative space. Sigrid explains that while she often uses her voice to pour out heartfelt emotion, on ‘Jellyfish’ she aimed for a carefree, joyful and playful sound.

Reignited creativity fuels fresh music

After two sold-out global tours, over 2.2 billion global streams, and career highlights such as performing on Glastonbury’s The Other Stage and headlining London’s OVO Wembley Arena, Sigrid took time in 2024 to reset. She stepped back from the pressure of “content culture” in writing rooms and rediscovered the joy of making music for its own sake.

Solo trips to remote areas of Norway, festival performances across South America, and cathartic jam sessions with her band rekindled her creative spark. Free from pressure and trusting her instincts, Sigrid began writing what felt good in the moment, resulting in ‘Jellyfish’.

Known as a festival favourite, Sigrid will appear at major events across Europe and the UK this summer, with confirmed dates at Y NOT, TRNSMT, Latitude and Tramlines, among others.

‘Jellyfish’ is out now on all major platforms.
