South London alt-folk artist Zara Smile releases their emotionally charged new single, ‘Fight Back’, out today. Following on from their recent release ‘Misplaced’, this track balances vulnerability and empowerment while tackling the quiet turmoil of imposter syndrome.
‘Fight Back’ explores themes of self-doubt and the fear of inadequacy. Zara weaves these challenging emotions with sharp, diaristic lyrics that express the internal battle between resignation and resolve. The song captures the struggle of showing up even when it feels like a losing fight, reflecting a message of quiet rebellion and hope.
Zara describes the song as “a five minute long panic attack, getting crazier and crazier as the song goes.” They experimented with time signatures to reflect this emotional intensity. The production pairs rich folk instrumentation with layered string arrangements and intermittent horn sections, building to an orchestral crescendo in the chorus. Zara’s heartfelt vocal delivery complements this, making the track both intimate and powerful.
A unique blend of influences shapes Zara’s sound
Zara Smile’s sound draws from a diverse palette of inspirations. They cite Black Country New Road, Laura Marling, Joni Mitchell, 2000s emo, and Riot Grrrl punk as key influences. This fusion creates a genre-bending style that feels both contemporary and timeless. Zara’s music invites listeners to connect deeply with their own emotions while also igniting a sense of shared experience.
Their storytelling is personal and authentic, rooted in a theatrical background that informs their vivid lyrical style. Zara has been praised for their stage presence and the emotional honesty they bring to their work. This single continues their journey to carve out a unique space in the alt-folk scene.
Zara Smile is one of four artists selected for Come Play With Me Records’ Next Up North programme. This initiative supports emerging artists of marginalised genders and sexualities from northern England. ‘Fight Back’ will feature on the Next Up North: Class of 2025 vinyl compilation, released on 8th August, alongside artists Dee Rae, Sinead Campbell, and Lucas Assagba.
Review
‘Fight Back’ presents Zara Smile’s strength through vulnerability. Their vocal performance is raw and compelling, conveying the emotional depth of imposter syndrome with honesty and nuance. The song’s dynamic arrangements, including strings and horns, add layers of texture that lift the track into a sweeping anthem of resilience.
The production manages to balance intensity and intimacy, avoiding overproduction while giving the song room to breathe. Although the song builds toward a powerful crescendo, it retains a delicate touch that fits Zara’s confessional style. ‘Fight Back’ confirms Zara Smile as an artist capable of combining thought-provoking lyrics with captivating melodies, making it a noteworthy addition to the alt-folk genre.
