Saying yes to her husband was an easy decision for Roseanna, even when the proposal itself refused to go to plan. Her new single ‘Yes’ celebrates feeling loved as yourself, including the flaws you struggle to accept.
The LA-based British/Irish singer-songwriter and actor also works under her full name, Roseanna Brown. The single centres on her relationship with her husband Sam, with acoustic guitar accompanying a vocal which builds towards a chorus with sweeping strings.
‘Yes’ is available now and has an accompanying video. Explaining its inspiration, Roseanna says: “This song is me trying my best to capture how my husband Sam makes me feel, and how saying yes to him was the easiest and best decision I’ve ever made.”
The proposal gave her a story which involved disrupted plans rather than a perfectly arranged occasion. “I managed to mess up his proposal plans in every way possible. But it didn’t matter, and it didn’t need to be perfect,” she says.
“Love isn’t perfect, and we aren’t perfect, but he loves me and sees me for the real me, and beyond all the things I think are flaws in myself, somehow they don’t matter at all. It’s the safest I’ve ever felt.”
A love song from the person saying yes
Roseanna wanted to write from the perspective of a woman accepting a marriage proposal, capturing her own response to the moment. She describes wanting to represent who she and Sam are, rather than offering an idealised account of their relationship.
She also explains why happiness has supplied relatively few of her songs. Much of her attention goes towards enjoying their life together, leaving less time spent writing about it. Returning to these feelings for ‘Yes’ gave her a chance to express them through music.
The single follows ‘Awake’, released alongside her role in the feature film Pressure. BBC Introducing has supported her solo releases, including ‘Yes’. Her earlier single ‘Help Me’ also arrived this year.
As frontwoman of The Rua, Roseanna performed on Westlife’s UK arena tour, including three nights at The O2. The band also appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival and Oscar Wilde Awards.
Alongside her own releases, Roseanna writes for other performers across pop, country, K-pop and dance. Her songwriting catalogue spans more than 60 releases across major and independent labels. Her film-related songwriting includes ‘Kingdom’, the end-title track for Michael Bay’s Songbird, which she wrote and sang.
Her acting credits also include appearances in four Harry Potter films, Thor: The Dark World and Citadel. Pressure is a WWII drama directed by Anthony Maras, adding another film role alongside her continuing solo music releases.
