A love letter addressed to a serial killer introduces Amelia Coburn’s second album. On ‘I Just Want To Say’, the north-east songwriter adopts an unreliable narrator whose attraction raises uncomfortable questions about devotion and obsession. The single is out now, accompanied by a playful video drawing on Amelia’s love of film.
Myself and Other Monsters follows on 5th March 2027, with Bill Ryder-Jones returning as producer after their work on Between the Moon and the Milkman. Paul Weller also features on the new album.
Amelia identifies hybristophilia, an attraction to people who commit crimes, as the starting point for the single. “Where is the line between love, lust and obsession,” she asks, “and how far would you go for the person you believe is the love of your life?”
The narrator believes she has found the love of her life. Her choice of recipient leaves her account of the relationship open to question.
The monsters beyond herself
The album began with Amelia examining impulses she had tried to suppress, including selfishness, jealousy, obsession and resentment. “I had spent a long time trying to suppress these facets of my personality,” she explains, “but realised that the more I tried to suppress them, the more insistently they would resurface.”
Those experiences became a starting point for stories reaching beyond her own life. “Although the album began with something intensely personal, it is not a straightforwardly autobiographical record,” Amelia says. Its characters include spectral creatures and morally ambiguous figures, alongside people who become monstrous or feel others have cast them in the role.
Gothic literature and vintage horror films inform the record’s storytelling, while its arrangements include brass, strings and harmonies. ‘I Just Want To Say’ introduces the album’s human characters alongside its spectral creatures.
Paul’s appearance follows Amelia’s contribution to Find El Dorado and their shows together in Newcastle and Liverpool.
Three full-band shows follow in December 2026, billed as Amelia’s biggest full-band headline dates so far. She plays Leeds’ Brudenell Social Club on 3rd December, Manchester’s YES Pink Room on 4th December and Gateshead’s The Glasshouse on 5th December.
A solo tour follows in January and February 2027, beginning at Glasgow’s Òran Mór on 28th January. Stops include Liverpool, Nottingham, Cambridge, Brighton, Cardiff and Pontardawe. The album release show follows at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room on 5th March.
Amelia previously sold out the same room and completed a sold-out headline UK tour earlier this year. Her support appearances also include Suzanne Vega and Hamish Hawk. She also received a Best Live Performer shortlist place at the 2026 AIM Independent Music Awards.
