Zara Smile
South London
Zara Smile is a South London alt-folk artist whose music combines diaristic writing, experimental structures and orchestral detail. ‘Fight Back’ examines imposter syndrome and the conflict between resignation and the decision to keep showing up. The arrangement uses changing time signatures, folk instrumentation, strings and intermittent horns before building towards a larger chorus. Zara Smile’s influences include Black Country, New Road, Laura Marling, Joni Mitchell, 2000s emo and Riot Grrrl punk. A background in theatre informs their vivid storytelling and stage presence. Zara Smile was selected for Come Play With Me Records’ Next Up North development programme, supporting artists of marginalised genders and sexualities from northern England.
