Gracie Val’s vocals are the immediate draw for me on DENYM’s ‘Without Sound’. She has been on my radar for a while, so her voice already feels familiar. Elijah Chase brings a boy-band quality I enjoy, and their voices harmonise beautifully.
The debut single is out now. DENYM bring together five musicians with experience as solo artists, session musicians and performers. Country influences form part of their identity, although this introduction feels firmly pop-focused to me.
More on DENYM
In my earlier interview with DENYM, the band described rewriting songs to make room for one another. They spoke about learning when to reduce their contributions, allowing the needs of a song to guide their decisions.
For Gracie and Elijah, sharing the lead involves choosing whose voice best serves each story. “Both of our voices add something completely different to the band,” they explained. Their approach leaves room for one singer to lead or both perspectives to appear, without requiring an equal split on every song.
‘Without Sound’ deals with the uncertainty of attraction: wondering whether someone shares your feelings or whether you have mistaken their behaviour for romantic interest. Self-doubt complicates the prospect of a relationship.
Further releases are planned, and the band have a London show scheduled at The Water Rats in King’s Cross on 23rd November.
‘Without Sound’ review
This is a strong debut, and I would recommend it to a pop listener first. You don’t need an existing interest in country to find a way into DENYM here.
One single leaves plenty of their ambitions unexplored. For now, I would happily hear more from them in this vein.
