Holly Humberstone has released her new single ‘Cruel World’, the title track from her upcoming second album, which arrives on April 10, 2026. The song introduces the emotional core of the record, exploring the complicated tension between love’s joy and its inevitable pain.
Holly explains that the song reflects the emotional distortion that can come with long-distance relationships. Being apart from someone you love reshapes how everything else feels, making ordinary moments seem strangely hollow. For Holly, the track captures the experience of missing someone so deeply that the rest of the world begins to feel unfamiliar.
“Cruel World comes from the euphoria and pain of long-distance,” Holly says. “Your perception of the world around you can be completely distorted without that one person in it. There’s no fun in going out solo when the only place you want to be is wherever they are.”
The release follows a busy start to the year for Holly. She recently completed a European headline tour, performed previous single ‘To Love Somebody’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and appeared at both London and Paris Fashion Week. The creative world around the new album now extends beyond music into a broader visual identity shaped alongside her sister Eleri and creative director Silken Weinberg.
Building the world of Cruel World
The upcoming album marks the next chapter after Holly’s debut Paint My Bedroom Black, which reached the UK Top 3. While the earlier record captured the turbulence of sudden success, Cruel World reflects a different emotional space. The new songs explore belonging, memory and personal growth, drawing on both romantic relationships and the bonds between women.
The visual language surrounding the album has also developed alongside the music. Holly and her collaborators built a fictional world inspired by childhood objects discovered while leaving the house she grew up in. Ballet shoes, old books and familiar trinkets helped reshape memories that once felt unsettling into something imaginative and playful.
Earlier singles including ‘To Love Somebody’ and ‘Die Happy’ introduced listeners to this darker, fairy-tale inspired atmosphere. Across these songs Holly continues her reputation for sharply observed songwriting, translating complex emotional states into clear, memorable lyrics.
Holly’s career has expanded rapidly in recent years. After winning the BRIT Rising Star award in 2022 and receiving an Ivor Novello nomination for early work, she has grown into a global performer with headline tours across the UK, Europe and North America. Along the way she has supported artists including Taylor Swift and joined Sam Fender on tour.
Momentum around the new album continues to build with a series of sold-out shows and festival appearances already confirmed. Holly will headline London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on April 2 as part of a run of UK out-store performances before the album arrives.
Beyond those dates, Holly will appear at major festivals this summer including Coachella, Governors Ball, Mad Cool and Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
Review
‘Cruel World’ feels like a statement piece. The track opens in a restrained space before gradually expanding, mirroring the emotional push and pull at the centre of the lyric.
Holly’s voice carries the song with a calm intensity. Rather than leaning into drama immediately, she lets the emotion unfold slowly. That approach gives the chorus more impact when the arrangement opens up around her.
The song’s theme of long-distance love brings both warmth and tension into the writing. Holly captures the strange feeling of living your everyday life while wishing you were somewhere else entirely.
What makes ‘Cruel World’ stand out is the clarity of the songwriting. The emotions are complex, yet the message lands cleanly. Holly balances vulnerability with confidence, creating a track that feels deeply personal without losing its wider connection.
If the title track reflects the spirit of the full album, Cruel World looks set to deepen the storytelling that has defined Holly’s music from the beginning.
