Taylor Mitchell makes an assured introduction with debut single ‘Tell Me All About Yourself’, a warm soul track built around the frustration of trying to get closer to someone who keeps pulling away. Released on 28th August 2026, it approaches that tension with curiosity rather than accusation, giving the song an intimacy that suits Taylor’s rich, gorgeous voice.
The song centres on sensing that somebody feels the same connection, only for them to retreat when things become vulnerable. Instead of turning that into confrontation, Taylor leaves space for uncertainty, with the writing asking questions rather than pretending there is an easy answer.
Raised in East London, Taylor Mitchell is a Scottish-Jamaican artist currently studying jazz performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Her influences include Corinne Bailey Rae and Minnie Riperton, with her music drawing contemporary soul together with a strong jazz foundation.
Jazz roots meet a looser funk groove
That background comes through clearly on ‘Tell Me All About Yourself’, but the track does not sit neatly inside one style. There is a light funk pull beneath the soul writing, while trumpet adds another splash of colour and gives the arrangement a livelier edge without crowding Taylor’s vocal.
The instrumental character works particularly well against the song’s subject. The groove keeps moving while the relationship described in the lyrics seems stuck, creating a contrast between musical ease and the difficulty of getting somebody to open up.
Taylor has already been developing that sound on stage, with appearances at The Jago, PizzaExpress Jazz Club, The Vortex, The Camden Club and Rich Mix, as well as The Jazz Social during EFG London Jazz Festival 2025. Live performances of ‘Tell Me All About Yourself’ and ‘Keep on Keeping On’ have also formed part of that early catalogue.
Further London performances are scheduled for Piano Smithfield on 6th November and Milton Court on 20th November. With jazz performance at the centre of her training, those live settings make sense for music that depends as much on feel and interplay as it does on the topline.
‘Tell Me All About Yourself’ Review
‘Tell Me All About Yourself’ is a gorgeous, soulful debut, and Taylor’s voice is immediately its strongest feature. Her delivery has warmth without becoming overly polished, while the funk touches and trumpet give the track movement and personality around her. It feels relaxed on the surface, but there is still a quiet frustration running underneath every attempt to understand someone who will not quite let themselves be understood.
What makes the debut work is how little the genre blend calls attention to itself. Jazz colours the phrasing and instrumentation, soul gives the song its centre, and the funkier passages keep it moving without disrupting its intimacy. ‘Tell Me All About Yourself’ introduces Taylor Mitchell as a singer with a striking voice and a strong instinct for letting the arrangement support the story rather than overwhelm it.
