Megan Black shares new single ‘Clementine’

Scottish alt-pop artist Megan Black returns with her powerful new single ‘Clementine’, released on 27th June via her own imprint. Known for her retro-infused sound and bold storytelling, Megan’s latest track is a 60s-inspired coming-of-age anthem rooted in queerness, self-discovery, and emotional release.

‘Clementine’ tells the story of an alternate version of Megan who never found the strength to come out, never left an unfulfilling relationship, and never pursued her musical dreams. Co-written with producer Jolon Yeoman, the song takes that vision and transforms it into a defiant, liberating celebration of identity. Megan says the track is about “that version of yourself who never got to be free” — and in true Megan Black fashion, she gives that story a voice.

Recorded in Edinburgh, the single boasts an organic, live feel, with a full band of talented collaborators adding warmth and texture. Paul Lamberton (bass), Lewis Ross (drums), Fraser Urquhart (keys), and Sam Ward-Hardy (guitar) all contribute to the vintage groove, while the gospel-tinged backing vocals from Eve Simpson, Katherine Aly and Maria Turnbull lift the track into something soaring and euphoric.

Raw, radiant and undeniably personal

Megan’s vocals are smoky, confident, and filled with intent. As she sings “She’s got a hold on me, she wants the world to know,” it’s easy to feel the weight of a life lived in hiding — and the power that comes with stepping into the light. Every line is delivered with purpose, grounded in a deeply lived experience.

Sonically, ‘Clementine’ blends retro influences with contemporary alt-pop polish. There are hints of Amy Winehouse and early Adele, but Megan’s songwriting and performance feel entirely her own. The production is tight, yet leaves space for the story to breathe.

This release shows Megan Black at her best: fearless, expressive, and unafraid to challenge norms. With past support from BBC Introducing and a growing international fanbase, this single adds further momentum to a career that continues to shine brighter with each step.

Review

‘Clementine’ is both intimate and anthemic. Megan Black balances vulnerability with quiet strength, offering a voice that feels lived-in yet fresh. The instrumentation supports her message beautifully, with layered harmonies and warm, analogue tones.

What stands out most is the honesty. The story feels specific yet deeply relatable, and Megan’s delivery ensures that every word lands. This is a track that stays with you long after it ends — and it’s one of her finest moments yet.

Lyrics

I know a lady
She drives me crazy
Keeping me up all night
I know a lady who’s all or nothing
One day she’ll be my wife

She’s got a hold on me
She won’t let go
She’s got a hold on me
She wants the world to know

Clementine
You’ve got my desire
Clementine
A woman on fire

Next she wants me to meet her mother
But we eat out, we don’t dine
I’ll run from it ‘cause
That’s all I’ve got, babe
Loving her feels like a crime

She’s got a hold on me
She won’t let go
She’s got a hold on me
She wants the world to know

Clementine
You’ve got my desire
Clementine
A woman on fire

She’s got me where she wants me
She’ll take all she can get
She’s got me where she wants me
But I’m not quite ready yet

My Clementine
