MALKA – Anatomy of Sight Review

Tamara Schlesinger is back with her new album, Anatomy of Sight. It’s her third release as MALKA following the brilliantly inventive Ratatatat and I’m Not Your Soldier and yet again gives us one of the most adventurous and exciting releases of the year.

There’s not a moment where the experimental nature of MALKA doesn’t shine through with gorgeous hooks and melodies that are given time to work their magic in ways we could never have anticipated. Anatomy of Sight is predictable in it unpredictability and constantly raises a smile through witty lyricism melded with the literal mind-blowing instrumental fun that infuses every single track.

If you haven’t followed MALKA this is the perfect opportunity to acquaint yourself. I hesitate to make comparisons but quite often I’m hearing music from other artists that could easily have been part of one of Tamara’s creations. Recently, Self Esteem‘s astounding ‘Fucking Wizardry’ has moments that emulate the brilliance on show here, but Anatomy of Sight carries these moments through an entire album resulting in what can only be described as a revelatory experience.

The opening track, and recent single, ‘Matriarch’ is playful, warming and a real ode the power of women and mothers.“You did it all alone” exudes a feeling of strength and independence all carried on an anthemic tune. It’s followed by the inspirational ‘Flashlight’ – another single that has rightly received wide critical acclaim.

Tamara, both in her previous bands and solo work AND her current projects as MALKA and also the leading light of the Hen Hoose collective, has been a remarkable artist. She has brought life to an independent music scene for years and it’s clear that she thrives in the most creative ways possible through experimentation with sound. Anatomy of Sight should be considered a landmark album in music and deserves all of the praise and recognition that is certain to receive.
